Savigliano is one of the main centre in Cuneo’s plain.
The valuable artistic testimonies of his storic centre and his territory are consequences of a past rich in history. It was initially inhabited by Celtic-Ligurian populations, then it has been conquered by Romans and at the end it became a Free Municipality. His geographic position particularly exposed him to the disputes with the Marquisate of Saluzzo. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, Savigliano lost his function as military stronghold and 100 years later, the city got back his own role. So, it became venue of important textile and mechanical manufactures.
Savigliano is the birthplace of famous people, like Giovanni Schiaparelli and Santorre di Santa Rosa; from them, they take the name of the main Savigliano’s squares, called “Piazza del Popolo”. This square had a lot of names but got this one definitely after the liberation. It was born in order to dispose an useful space for commerce and market; it had also the role to create a connection between the Garrison and Neighborhood of San Giovanni. A lot of structures overlook on the square, giving a sober and linear look.
In the centre of the square there’s a General Arimondi’s statue, the west side is closed by the “tettoia del mercato”, the north and sud sides are equipped with arcades and the east side is characterized by “il molo”, a very popular meeting point.
The building in which it stands our Bed&Breakfast is called “Porta di San Giovanni”, which it is one of the doors through which the city, surrounded by walls, could be accessed in ancient times. The King Carlo Emanuele III granted to build a house above it, with the clause of keeping the coat of arms of the House of Savoy on the facade.
